Proyecto Hombre Association demand before UN better interventions in the field of addictions
Proyecto Hombre Association was present for another year at the 65th edition of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).
On this occasion, Proyecto Hombre had a special participation by leading an event entitled: “Promotion of evidence-based civil society interventions in collaboration with Member States and International Organizations” .
In this side event, which was held virtually last Thursday, March 17, in addition to experts from Proyecto Hombre and the University of Oviedo, the UNODC, the Spanish government, the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs, Dianova International and the GLORI Foundation participated. This evento also counted with the support of the government of Uruguay and RIOD.
It brought together 3 levels of intervention to address the problem of addictions: prevention, treatment and harm reduction, and also contemplates how it is carried out on 3 continents: Europe, Asia and Latin America, with representatives from each of the areas.
From this triple perspective, the latest initiatives and good practices on interventions based on evidence and research of Civil Society Organizations of these three continents were discussed in collaboration with International Organizations and Member States.
Evidence-based interventions are instructional procedures for which an acceptable level of research has been provided and have proven results.
The delegate of the National Plan on Drugs (Spain), Dr. Joan R. Villalbí, intervened at the beginning of this side event recognizing the work of Proyecto Hombre and the importance of civil society in this area, followed by Doña Giovanna Campello, Director of the Section of Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Don Matej Kosir, Vice President of the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs.
The prevention perspective was carried out by the Asociación Proyecto Hombre with María Aránzazu Fernández, an expert from the Association’s Prevention Commission, and Susana Al-Halabí, professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Oviedo, who shared how was designed the evaluation of a school prevention program in Spain, specifically our program “Juego de llaves ”.
Lucía Goberna, head of institutional relations at the NGO Dianova Internacional, spoke about the implementation of the COPOLAD quality management system for the Uruguayan Drug Treatment Network.
Danil Nikitin, President of the Global Research Institute of the GLORI Foundation , shared the results and impressions obtained from community-based studies on overdose prevention and self-diagnosis of the hepatitis virus among people who use drugs in Kyrgyzstan and other countries of the region.
“It is fundamental to be present for another year at the CND, since it is the most important annual international forum in which world leaders meet with the aim of discussing drug policies and finding innovative solutions to emerging challenges” explained by Oriol Esculies, international delegate of Proyecto Hombre Association and also moderator of this side event .
During this parallel event, the best and latest initiatives on interventions and research in prevention, treatment and harm reduction were shared to try to expand and improve the quality of services, interventions and policies based on scientific evidence as an integral part of the health system.
Our goal with this side event is to remember that disorders caused by addictions are a major health and development problem worldwide.
Expanding and improving the quality of services, interventions, and drug policies based on scientific evidence as an integral part of the health system is one of our goals, and civil society is crucial to achieving this objective and if alliances with Member States are generated and International Organizations the scope is even greater.

APH participation in other side events
Proyecto Hombre was also present at two other side events.
On the one hand, Proyecto Hombre Association participated in the side event organized by the World Federation of Therapeutic Communities (WFTC), whose main theme was “People-Centered Innovations in Therapeutic Communities”.
The event highlighted the importance of having evidence-based therapeutic communities as an integral component of health systems and emphasized the need to provide a variety of services in the continuum of care. In addition, innovative practices and networks in the field of therapeutic communities were presented.
Oriol Esculies, international delegate of Proyecto Hombre Association, intervened as moderator.
In addition we co-organized the parallel event led by the NGO Dianova Internacional: “Children and Families Affected by Parental Drug Use: Current Gaps and Promising Practices”.
This event wanted to give greater visibility to boys and girls whose fathers or mothers use drugs. Recommendations were shared, followed by discusión on how to design human rights-based interventions for the whole family.
