Proyecto Hombre participates in UNODC events to commemorate the Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is commemorated every 26th of June, Proyecto Hombre intervened in the commemoration ceremony carried out by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) last 25th of June.
Proyecto Hombre takes part with the presence of Oriol Esculies, director of Projecte Home Catalunya, who participates as the international delegate of the Association Proyecto Hombre. Esculies intervenes in the space reserved to civil society organizations to highlight the need to address drug-related problems at a global level with a comprehensive, science-based and health-focused approach.
According to the World Drug Report 2021, there is an increase of drug use, thus in his speech Esculies defended several aspects among them the importance of investing in drug prevention based on quality standards, the expansion of access to drug treatments and social reintegration services, especially for those most vulnerable groups such as women, children, ethnic minorities, people with dual pathology or prisoners.
It is also necessary to stress the need to reduce the stigma of people who use drugs and to decriminalize their use, incorporating a human rights sensitive approach into drug policies at all levels and promoting alternatives to imprisonment, access to controlled substances and the abolition of the death penalty. Finally, we must defend the creation of awareness about the causes and consequences related to drug issues, actively involving all relevant parties to achieve sustainable solutions.
