Proyecto Hombre organizes the Side Event: “Evidence-based treatment as an integral part of the health system”
Proyecto Hombre has organized today the Side Event: “Evidence-based treatment as an integral part of the health system”, during the 63rd Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND). This event is co-organized by the Government of Spain, the Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation Section, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, World Federation of Therapeutic Communities, Turkish Green Crescent Society and Dianova International.
Drug Use Disorders (DUDs) constitute a public health, developmental and security problem both in developed and developing countries worldwide. Nowadays, scientific evidence has indicated S/DUDs are a multifactorial disorder and associated with health problems, poverty, violence, criminal behaviour, and social exclusion. Strengthening prevention and treatment for people with DUDs is an essential demand reduction strategy of significant public health importance.

The UNODC-WHO International Standards for the Treatment of Drug Use Disorders encourage all Member States to consider expanding the coverage and improving the quality of drug treatment systems, interventions and policies based on scientific evidence as an integral part of the health system. The Standards recommend comprehensive and balanced approaches, and suggest scienceand human rights-based treatment modalities such as outreach, outpatient, inpatient and residential treatment programmes. As one of the implementation tools based on the International Standards, UNODC, in collaboration with WHO, has been developing a quality assurance mechanism and tools for drug treatment, which are applicable globally with a generous and strong contribution from the Government of Spain. Furthermore, UNODC undertakes fruitful collaboration in research with non-profit organizations and their drug monitoring centers.
This side event will focus on the latest science in the field of drug-dependence treatment and rehabilitation, by exploring significant studies from relevant, international researchers.
Over 100 international organizations have signed a Statement titled: «EVIDENCE-BASED TREAMENT AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE HEALTH SYSTEM», claiming all the above.
